The challenge
Freight forwarding involves many interdependent steps — quotations, shipping line coordination, BL/AWB documentation, invoicing, approvals, and payments — each with its own rules for incoterms, shipment types, and internal permissions. The system needed to model this entire chain accurately while supporting multiple roles without becoming difficult to use.
The approach
- 01
Mapped the company's real operational workflow, from customer visit and quotation through job creation, documentation, and payment.
- 02
Designed a Django backend with role-based permissions for Admin, Accounts, Operations, and Sales users.
- 03
Modeled support for the full set of shipping incoterms across both FCL and LCL, import and export shipments.
- 04
Built PDF generation for BL/AWB documents, invoices, and payment receipts using WeasyPrint and ReportLab.
- 05
Implemented sales commission and shipping-agent commission tracking through to payroll.
- 06
Added a reporting module covering sales, job register, profit, commissions, receivables, payables, tax, and payroll.
- 07
Designed a simple, production-grade UI with dark mode support.
The outcome
The result is a connected ERP that turns a paper-heavy freight forwarding workflow into a single system — from quotation to job to payment — with commission tracking and month-end reporting built in from the start.
